GLP-1 Coverage: Employees Are Asking About This

This is one of the fastest-growing questions I’m hearing from employers right now:
“Does our plan cover medications like Ozempic or Wegovy?”

And the answer is not always straightforward.

If you’re an employer, this is something you’re likely going to be asked if you haven’t already.

GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy are becoming one of the most talked-about topics in employee benefits due to rising demand and increasing costs.

GLP-1 medications were originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes, but they are now also being prescribed for weight management. Because of that, awareness has grown quickly, and employees are starting to look at their benefits differently.

This is no longer just a clinical conversation; it is becoming a benefits conversation.

Are GLP-1 Medications Covered by Insurance?

Here is where the confusion happens:

  • GLP-1 medications are typically covered when prescribed for diabetes

  • GLP-1 medications are usually not covered when prescribed for weight loss

Even when it’s the same medication, coverage depends on:

  • The diagnosis

  • The plan design

Is GLP-1 Coverage Required in California?

No ,there is currently no requirement in California for health plans to cover GLP-1 medications for weight loss. There was a proposed bill (AB 575), but it did not pass.

As of 2026, Medi-Cal does not cover GLP-1 medications for weight loss. Coverage remains for diabetes and other approved uses

This reinforces that weight loss treatment is still not considered a required covered benefit.

What Employers Should Do

If employees are asking about GLP-1 coverage, it does not mean you need to add it right away.
But it does mean, you should understand what your current plan covers and you should be prepared to communicate that clearly

GLP-1 coverage is becoming a more common question, but it is not currently required and not standard for weight loss coverage. If your employees are asking about it, it’s worth reviewing your options so you can make an informed decision.

If you’re unsure how your current plan handles GLP-1 coverage, I’m happy to walk through it with you and help you understand your options.
